Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.—
John F. Kennedy
Today in history: JFK defeated Vice President Richard Nixon, November 8, 1960.
In memory of my beloved father Ed. It’s been two years now, but not a day passes in which I don’t think of him or his voice or his crazy ways. He’s still very much a part of me and always will be. I thank God for such an amazing father.
It afflicts us all. Because surety in our own judgments is part of being human.
I got my start at Wegmans. :) Fresh back from 14-months in Germany, I needed money to pay for healthcare. My parents kindly offered me free rent, food, and travel to Arizona and back to send my brother off to college. From prepared foods, I went on to holiday decorating and deli. Learning to use the industrial-strength slicer was way-cool! I was a Wegmans’ employee for only 2 or 2 1/2 months before I headed to NYC to try out the legal field. I decided distressed debt trading and transactions was not my thing and after 2 1/2 years moved on to DC and graduate school.
I had no idea Alec Baldwin was such a Wegmans die hard until a friend at work passed on this important news. As he walks down the aisle and sings Wegmans’ praises I have a hard time taking him seriously as 30 Rock is fresh in mind.
But don’t let that fool you. Wegmans is something to be taken very seriously. It’s a little haven. Some of my favorite childhood memories are going midnight grocery shopping with my mom during highschool. Strolling through the aisles, riding on the grocery cart :), and listening to the music on the PA system were such a stress reliever. It was an alternate reality.
Coach’s trick to learning about anything in the world: just sing about it. We learn our countries by putting them to music. :) Don’t remember this episode, but glad a colleague mentioned it tonight. A priceless Cheers moment - especially since I’ve actually been to Albania and can confirm it is indeed mountainous! I did not realize, however, that chrome was its chief export. Thanks, Coach!
